FIFTY-SEVEN
PAST
CHICAGO
I thought faking it was over. That I could figure out who I really was after I got married. Or at the least, create a new version of myself.
I thought freedom was on the other side of this when I boarded a plane for Chicago, leaving everything behind.
The party girl. Thatâs what I appeared to be when he met me. And that was what he expected me to be when he snapped his fingers. But only then.
When I was not expected to perform in that way, I was expected to be his pristine wife. Long brown hair tied close to my neck. Neutral makeup. White blouses and perfect manners.
I thought being a trophy wife would be a leisurely life. I thought I would spend my days doing whatever I wanted.
That hadnât been the case. There were parties to plan, there were trips to plan. There was our huge house to care for.
Even with the aid of a full-time housekeeper, it was hard for me to keep up. And I wanted nothing more than to keep up, to keep him happy, to be everything he needed.
Apollo wore different faces, and he wore them well. Tonight, he was more like the man I met. So free, fewer lines on his face. He was with his college friends. The ones attached to his side when he visited the Ozarks, finding me, rescuing me.
And among those friends was a new friend. One who hadnât been there the night I met my husband.
I felt Nick eyeing me the whole night. The hair on the back of my neck would raise, I would feel warm. It would never get easier, being in the same room as him.
He was attractive. Long blond hair he pulled up into a messy bun most days, his eyelashes were dark, and when they fluttered over his blue eyes, women fell.
I found him attractive, yes, but I didnât flirt back. I kept my attraction locked down.
I would not bite the hand that fed me.
I looked across the room to my husband. He was laughing, his hand on the fireplace, the other holding a glass of red wine. He loved me in the hue, surrounded himself with it. I looked down at my red dress, my hand involuntarily crept to my mouth; I wanted to smudge the perfect lines of my red, red lips.
When Nick found me, I was drumming my fingertips on the marble countertop, staring across the room at the rest of the guests. The kitchen was rarely empty, but at the moment, it was, so I escaped there. Escaped within myself, within eyesight of Apollo.
âYou look lovely tonight, Cal,â Nick said, using my husbandâs moniker for me.
âAnd so do you,â I replied, turning my body toward him. I felt my pulse between my legs, that steady beating women felt when they were near someone they found attractive.
He ran his hand through his hair then, it was down, a little wild looking, and it seemed like he knew I felt it, and I wondered if he could hear my heart beating.
